About Sunrise Seattle
We are an intersectional group of young people and we believe that a better world is possible. We gather at our local libraries and online to fight for the future we want to see.
Our Goals
Base Building: Our individual voices are powerful but together we will not be ignored. We aim to organize young people, centering members of our communities who have been marginalized based on race, class, gender, sexuality, immigration status, tribal membership, religion, and others who have been excluded from political and economic power. In fostering community we build our power.
Political Action: We strive to be engaged throughout the political process, from identifying and championing candidates who will fight for Green New Deal solutions to building grassroots campaigns supporting climate justice policies.
Community Engagement: We are deeply rooted in the place we call home. We are proud to live in one of the most beautiful cities on Earth and we will fight to protect the air, the waterways, and the land that sustains us. We are grounded in our community and we want to build strong partnerships with others who share our vision for the future. We seek to educate those around us about the urgency of the climate crisis and to ensure that solutions bring us closer to a world where we can live in harmony with each other and with the places we love.
Hub Structure
Our movement relies on the participation of our members to succeed. We meet biweekly via Zoom, in addition to other events and actions throughout the year. Membership is open to anyone, regardless of how much time you have to contribute. Interested in getting involved? Visit our connect page to learn more!
Our hub is guided by our leadership team that helps to organize and focus our efforts. We are always looking for more leaders! In addition to biweekly meetings, hub leaders will typically have at least one additional meeting and 1+ hours of project work each week. If you are interested in stepping into leadership, please fill out our Leader Interest Form. We will reach out to schedule a chat to figure out where you can put your time and talents toward reaching our goals as a hub and as a movement! Note: as a youth movement, we ask that only Sunrise members who are 35 or younger join the leadership team!
Sunrise Movement - National
Sunrise Seattle is part of a broader movement connected across the United States. Our vision is simple: we believe everyone should have access to clear air and water, full pantries of food, affordable housing, free public transportation, good and meaningful jobs, vibrant community centers, and lives filled with joy. Sunrise Movement is organizing thousands of young people in hubs across the country to make that happen.
Sunrise Seattle honors the Coast Salish peoples of the lands and waters we call home. We acknowledge that we are on the unceded ancestral lands of the first people of Seattle, the Dxʷdəwʔabš (Duwamish) People, who have been stewards of this place since time immemorial, who are still here today, and who will continue to be leaders in our community for generations to come. We honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.
